Nubian Head Mask - Item #650
5 Inches High x 3 Inches Wide x 4 Inches Deep
This is a mask from the original bust. The 1848 original is bronze although there are many copies in collections around the world. This piece was Charles Cordier's first and most successful ethnographic sculpture. Cordier created it using the traditional method of sculpting the bust in clay and creating a plaster cast from his clay model. During this period it was more popular in ethnographic sculpture to create a plaster cast from a live model. Although he was not the sitter, the bust is said to be of Saïd Abdallah of the Mayac Tribe in the Kingdom of Darfour.
