Nubian Female Mask - Item #299
11 Inches High x 10 Inches Wide x 5.25 Inches Deep
This mask is from the bust created by German sculptor Rudolf Thiele (1856-1930). The bust, as well as the companion bust of a male, have been made in various materials and also reproduced by other artists. The sculptures are usually polychrome, with yellow or gold clothing and a brown skin tone. The male bust was created by Austrian sculptor Wilhelm Christian Andreas Giesecke (1854-1917). In the bust from which this mask was created, the woman wears a headwrap while the top of her drapery is visible, falling below her shoulders and revealing her breasts. In a beautiful pose, her left shoulder is raised while the other is lowered, and her head is turned to the left as well, with downcast eyes.
